Artist Sunny Min primarily works with text and ceramics, experimenting with simplification, observation, collecting, drawing, sculpture, and installation to create works centred on the act of dedication: dedicating one’s time and space to found or lost entities and thoughts.

These examples are the core inspirations of where my
works are unearthed from.

Sunny often works with themes of grief, remembrance, and ritual. In her piece The Objects That Drink (물들은 차림), she explores traditional Korean cultural practices, transforming historic painted silk screens (chaekgado) into physical objects rather than aspirational ornaments. These objects start to act as physical and ritualised reflections of how memories once shared with a friend are experienced after their passing. In her work 3 People and 1 Scent, Sunny looks at fragrance as memory, testing how a smell can be tied to a past experience, and how a repeated exposure to the same fragrance can alter a person’s relationship to a certain memory

Sunny’s work The Lavishness of Normal is currently being exhibited at Six Foot Gallery as part of our annual graduate show, Starter Pack. Tucked into often overlooked nooks and crannies in the gallery, this piece is an ongoing text based project in which Sunny commits to a consistent practice of noticing the random and mundane, stemming from a desire to balance and contradict the fast-paced-short-attention-span-pushing-algorithms of today, as well as serving as a way to practice different styles of writing and expression. Through the use of the gallery label format – the ubiquitous small white flat boxes containing important information about their associated works – Sunny encourages the audience to reflect on what they choose to see and not see.
