THE SIX FOOT GALLERY INTERVIEW – Heather Downie

Six Foot Gallery is delighted to present its annual Summer Show, featuring thirty-four artists working in a diverse range of mediums and disciplines.

Drawing inspiration from the flora of Scotland’s landscapes, Heather attempts to magnify the beauty, colours and patterns she finds in these spaces, building highly energetic, playful, and dynamic scenes. The forms that she draws inspiration from are gradually abstracted and reimagined to build new kaleidoscopic environments. The viewer is invited to explore this new landscape, melting and swimming between the brushstrokes, and finding familiarity in the smaller details.

Through an array of textures and a playful interpretation of light and dark, Heather aims to create a dialogue between the physical and ethereal spaces. The fluidity of forms allows her to express the energy and vibrancy of these landscapes, and a visual rhythm stimulates the observer to explore the tumultuous terrain.

Hi Heather! Can you walk us through your creative process?
I am always going outside! Got to gather the goods for later

What challenges did you experience during the creation of your work and how did
you overcome them?

I always encounter challenges when I draw. Its pretty rare to not fight with the work at
some point. You either have to just keep going or turn it around and face the wall.

Which artists inspire you? Are there non-artistic influences such as literature or
music that impact your work?

I will often listen to music when I paint. The albums Archipelago by Hidden Orchestra, For
All Your Needs by Norman Willmore, Aphex Twin are what I’m listening to right now.

How has your practice changed over time?
It is constantly changing and evolving. In fact, that’s one thing I’m frightened of – my
practice staying the same. After all, how can it stay the same when we ourselves do not?
I am continuously changing as a person and so too will my work.

What do you do to keep motivated and interested in your work?
To be honest getting to the studio is a win. If I am in the studio I have no choice to at least
sit amongst my work and maybe I will draw something. But it’s okay if I don’t have
anything to draw. Some days I will go and I will do nothing..and that’s when I know I have
to go outside to remember.

Can you share a glimpse of your next project?
I am painting a goblin at the moment. I also might paint some more big birds.
