Fiona Greer is a visual artist based in Scotland. Fiona graduated from Edinburgh College of Art in 2011 with a BA(Hons) in Fine Art specialising in Sculpture. Her work has been displayed in various exhibitions and publications, and mainly deals with the paranormal and haunted locations within Scotland. She explores these areas gathering research photos and sketches, which then develop into her finished pieces. She uses her own experience with the paranormal and channels the energy she feels in these spaces into her dark and expressive works
Hi Fiona! Can you give us some insight into how your artistic journey started?
I’ve always been interested in drawing, especially darker horror themes, from a young age. This inclination grew when I went to Art School where my work became more comedic dark. Over the last two years I’ve restarted my artistic practice and really found my style and preferred subject matter.
How did you arrive at the theme of your work?
Purely through exploring my interest in abandoned or haunted places, particularly buildings. I try to capture the feeling of emptiness or presence that remains within them in my work.
What emotions or reactions do you hope viewers experience when they see your artwork?
Hopelessness, fear, unease? I’m very interested in liminal art and hope that my pieces could trigger a memory of a dream or a nightmare.
What advice would you give to artists who are just starting out?
Apply for as many open calls as possible and do all you can to get your work out there, whether that’s networking at openings or social media. Get connected with artists with similar styles or goals to keep that encouragement and connection up.
Will your next project be a continuation of your current style or are you experimenting with something different? Can you share a glimpse of your next project?
I have a list of haunted or abandoned places I want to visit next year for research and in situ drawings. This will will be a continuation of my current work, and in a similar style. My next location will be Bannockburn House, which has a lot of reported paranormal activity.
