Our Autumn Open Call Memento Vivere runs October 10th to 18th, featuring twenty-three artists showcasing a range of styles and mediums.
Fiona Greer is a visual artist based in Falkirk. Graduating from Edinburgh College of Art in 2011 with a BA (Hons) in Fine Art specialising in Sculpture, their work has been displayed in various exhibitions and publications over the UK. Fiona’s work mainly deals with the paranormal and haunted spaces. They channel energy from these places into their photography and painting, and have a huge interest in spirit drawing. Their work is a way to explore these haunted areas around Scotland. Fiona also draws inspiration from their own experience with the paranormal.
How did your artistic journey start, Fiona?
I’ve been drawing for as long as I can remember, and I’m specifically interested in drawing horror and darker themes. This only grew stronger the more I moved through school and then art school where I really worked out my style and influences.
How has your practice changed over time?
My work used to have a lot of dark humour. My sculpture especially was very tongue in cheek but the older I get the more interested I am in capturing these haunted spaces and how I feel within them.
Which artists inspire you? Are there non-artistic influences such as literature or music that impact your work?
Bernard Buffet and Bruce Nauman. I’m also inspired by music especially The Cure and Gary Numan, and also horror films.
What emotions or reactions do you hope viewers experience when they see your artwork?
Fear, curiosity, hopelessness. I also want to creative images that might trigger a memory of a dream or nightmare they’ve once had.
What do you do to keep motivated and interested in your work?
I explore places, even if they aren’t connected to ghost stories, I take reference photos, watch horror films to feel what I want to capture.
Will your next project be a continuation of your current style or are you experimenting with something different? Can you share a glimpse of your next project?
A continuation of seeking out haunted places around Scotland that I am drawn to, and exploring these and channeling what energy I pick up into my art.
